Information for Aerobic System Owners
|
- Have your septic system or aerobic system pumped out by a
reputable waste hauler every 3 to 5 years depending on the tank size
and usage.
- Keep ant poison around the air pump housing and the tank lids.
Ants will get into the electrical components and cause pump failure.
- Never pour chemicals down the drains such as paint,
pesticides, solvents or caustic drain openers. These chemicals kill
the enzymes and bacteria that are necessary for your system to work
properly.
- Try to do laundry daily and not all at once so that you
don’t overload the system.
- Non-biodegradable material such as cat box litter, hair,
disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, egg shells, and coffee grounds
are not attacked by enzymes or bacteria. These materials settle
to the bottom and will decrease the capacity of the tank and must be
removed. Toilet paper is okay. It will degrade.
- Avoid letting large amounts of grease or oils into the tank.
Grease is one of the hardest materials for your system to process.
Grease and oils also will combine with soap and laundry detergents to
form a scum that is very hard to decompose. Use garbage disposals as
little as possible because they add extra solids to the tank. Large
solids, such as cigarette butts, paper towels, and condoms should be
placed in the garbage.
- Avoid cleaning products going down the drain. The same
is true of household products such as chlorine bleaches.
Chlorine kills the enzymes and bacteria. These types of products
should be avoided. Use alternative products as much as possible.
- Swimming pool chlorine is illegal and dangerous to use in your
septic system. Only use chlorine that is labeled for residential
wastewater. Call or E-mail us, your maintenance provider or
installer if you have any questions. Most hardware stores in
rural areas have the correct chlorine. Home Depot or Lowes sells
Norweco in a 10 pound bucket (it has a blue lid) for around $65 plus tax.
If needed we can sell you a 10 pound bucket for $69 and bring it to your
house on our next inspection or next time we are in area.
